Water for Skin Health

By Dr. Veena G.D.

Our skin is comprised of 90% water wherein water plays a major role. Water is involved in and helps improve many bodily functions including digestion, absorption, circulation, and excretion. One of the more specific benefits of drinking water is detoxification (excretion). Water is not only essential for providing nutrients to the cell but at the cellular level it carries the metabolites and toxins to excretory system i.e. kidneys where it is voided in the form of urine. Small amount of toxins are also excreted through the skin pores in the form of sweat. Sweat contains sebaceous secretions and moisture.

Water is also beneficial for muscles. It is responsible for maintaining proper muscle tone and prevents painful muscle cramping.

Use of moisture creams containing water and essential oil preparations, not only helps to restore the skin moisture but forms an effective barrier to water loss from the skin.Steaming and splashing face with warm water helps in washing away the blackheads.

In summer, there is a benefit of drinking water in increased quantity. The benefits are proper body function and keeping the skin hydrated. This leads to overall good health.

For the average healthy person, drinking 8 – 12 glasses of water per day becomes essential to keep the body toxin free and attain healthy moist skin. Moisture restored skin always has a glowing sheen. So drinking water makes the body more relaxed and invigorated. It also replaces the moisture lost due to physical activities of day to day life. Simply put, these are all the benefits of drinking water for skin.
