Our skin acts as a shield against the environment. When excessive temperatures threaten to overheat our body, our skin regulates the body core temperature and protects the delicate inner organs. However, in the process it bears the brunt of the heat and gets sunburned, tanned, wrinkled, blemished or damaged. To protect our skin in summer is of utmost importance.
Hygiene – Good hygiene avoids summer-related skin infections.
-
Shower at least twice a day to prevent build-up of dried salts and sweat-induced bacterial growth.
-
Avoid too much of anti-perspirants. They not only clog pores but inhibit sweating. This interferes with skin’s thermo regulatory and excretory mechanism. It is also hygienic to use body talcum powder.
-
Make sure never to spray deodorant on broken skin. The chemicals in it might further worsen the situation.
-
If one is afflicted with ringworm infection (circular red patches on the body that itch intensely), fungal infections (whitish macerated itchy skin, especially in bodily folds like the groin, under arms) or athlete's foot, immediately consult your dermatologist.
Sun protection
-
Apply sunscreen generously at least 10 -15 minutes before going out in sun. Can be reapplied once every fourth hourly. For swimming use a waterproof sun block.
-
Sun block products containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide chemical form an opaque barrier on the skin against the penetration of UV rays.
-
Sunscreens can protect from sunburns, blemishes and skin aging due to UV exposure, but do not completely prevent a tan.
-
Simply using an umbrella or a wide-rimmed hat and sunglasses will prevent tanning.
-
Daily use of ordinary talcum powder also provides the sun block effects.
Always take advice from qualified skin specialist to choose the right sunscreen for you.
Antioxidants
Oxidative damage from free radicals through ultraviolet radiation can be prevented by intake of antioxidants. You can take them naturally in the form of fresh salads, brightly-colored carotene rich fruits like mangoes and papayas, Vitamin C fruits like sweet lime and lemons, green or iced tea which is rich in flavonoids are all excellent sources of antioxidants.
Skin Moisturizers
We generally don’t realize the loss of moisture in the form of sweat via skin. So it is advisable to use water based moisture products keeping in mind the summer weather where heat saps the moisture from the skin, leaving it dry and rough. Drink 2 - 3 liters of water daily to stay well-hydrated.
Emergency Tips
Apply icepacks and a layer of chilled lactocalamine lotion for acute sunburn. If the condition further worsens and the lesions become painful, contact the dermatologist right away. For heat rashes (prickly heat) apply calamine lotion and ice packs. Also wear loose and light colored clothing.
Follow these few simple tips and your skin will remain fresh, smooth and glowing through the summer!
