Myopia

By Dr. Veena G.D., MBBS, DOMS

Light passes through the cornea at the front of the eye through the pupil and is focused by the crystalline natural lens onto the retina. The retina, located at the posterior end of the eye converts incoming light into signals which the brain interprets as image. When all these structures are in perfect alignment, the person has crystal clear, 20/20 or 6/6 vision. When they are even slightly out of alignment, the vision is blurry. These are known as Refractive Errors.

People with Myopia can see nearby objects clearly, but at a distance, things appear blurry. Most often this is due to cornea being too steep or an eye that is too long. Here the focused image is formed in front of the plane of the retina. A concave lens of suitable power is placed before the eye so as to diverge the rays and focus them on the retina. It can be corrected with spectacles as well as contact lens. Thereby the distant objects are visualized clearly.

Kids may not realize the nearsightedness in the beginning but parents will notice that the kid goes very close to the TV, prefers to sit in first few benches in the classroom or holds the objects very close to the face and often squints the eye, will generally show less interest in outdoor activities or sometimes can misspell the spellings. This should all direct in subjecting the kid to careful evaluation of vision for nearsightedness. Sometimes the correction glass not only corrects the distant vision clear, it boosts up the morale of the child so that it can pick up lot of outdoor sports activity also.

Most of the people working in office are always exposed to unlimited hours of reading and computer working. This can be done without any affect on the myopic eye provided person wears appropriate concave correction glasses.
