Eye Problems

Eye problems usually occur in one eye or both the eyes. It can present with visual symptoms or disturbance of visual acuity or eye movements, ocular symptoms of systemic disorder. Examination of the eye and its surrounding tissue with or without special aids may yield valuable information for the diagnosis and treatment of common ocular problems.

  • Refractive Errors: Refractive status of the eye enables us to visualize very far to very close objects/images. Various factors affect the visual apparatus which results in inability to focus, there by the requirement for correction. This correction is done through visual aids viz spectacles, contact lens etc.

    • Presbyopia: receding of near point or unable to read small print after 40 years.
    • Hyperopia or Hypermetropia: Farsightedness or longsightedness.
    • Myopia: Nearsightedness or shortsightedness.
    • Astigmatism: Blurring of vision without a point focus.
    • Amblyopia(Lazy Eye): Eyes always work in pair and their synchronized movement together is called as primary gaze. This is achieved by well balanced two sets of rectus muscles and one elevator muscle. In some conditions one of the muscles is not balanced, thereby both the eyes are not working together. This results into squint – divergent or convergent.

     

  • Eyelid problems: The eyelids protect the eyes by preventing contact with foreign materials and drying of the cornea and conjunctiva. Any ailment involving the eyelid skin, muscle and movements will give rise to any of the following conditions.

     

  • Conjunctivitis – Inflammation of the anterior most layer of the eye.

  • Dry Eyes – A condition where the dryness sets in the eye due to insufficient tear film.

  • Corneal Diseases – Viral Keratitis, keroto conjunctivitis, SPK superficial punctate keratitis, Corneal dystrophies, corneal thinning, keratoconus.

  • Glaucoma – the condition wherein the intraocular pressure of the eye is above normal and produces damaging effect.

  • Uveitis – the color rendering part of the eye – Iris is called uvea and its inflammatory conditions.

  • Cataracts – the opacification of the natural crystalline lens which helps us in focusing.

  • Retinal Disorders – Retina is a layer of nerve cells and blood vessels, so retinal ailment will always have visual symptoms along with disease pathology as in diabetic retinopathy, Age Related Macular Degeneration, Cystoid Macular Oedema, Retinitis Pigmentosa(Night Blindness), Achromatopsia(Color Blindness), Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.

  • Optic Neuritis – Optic nerve carries the visual impulse input from retina to the brain for interpretation. Disease condition of this is generally called as optic neuritis.
